What is to work in God's economy?
Romans 10:9 tells us "that if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him out from the dead, you will be saved." And it is 1 John 4:5 that states, "If anyone confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God." It is these ones who believe and confess that Jesus is LORD, these ones who have God abiding in them, that are in the kingdom of God. But what many don't understand is that God has His own economy.
Maybe you're thinking, this is crazy. God doesn't care about money, money isn't even going to be a thing in heaven, so why would God have His own economy? Well, let's start again with the scriptures, because 2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us that "all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work." And John 17:17 also tells us that the WORD of God, is truth. So whenever we need to know and understand the truth, we know that it is found in God's WORD. Even when other people say something different than the WORD, their lack of faith never nullifies God's faithfulness and His WORD, for GOD is true, and man is the liar.
The WORD of God, is infallible truth.
So now that we have the truth of the WORD established, we can better understand the concept of God's economy. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the economy is "the system of trade and industry by which the wealth of a country is made and used." When someone is born again by the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ, they are made brand new creatures because they once had a dead spirit, but now their spirit is joined with the LORD.
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
1 Corinthians 6:17
And as new creatures who are now one spirit with the LORD, a born-again, baptized believer in Jesus Christ is no longer of this world, but is of a new system, a new kingdom- the kingdom of God.
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But My kingdom is not from the world."
John 18:36
In God's economy, the wisdom of God and the knowledge & understanding of His WORD, are all more valuable than any amounts of gold, silver, rubies, diamonds, or cash. And the understanding of this truth, is what sets God's economy apart from the economy of this world and the system of Mammon.
You see, it's not that the people of the kingdom of God are exempt from working. Because the WORD is our standard of truth, we know that is actually the complete opposite, as "the one who is unwilling to work, shall not eat" according to 2 Thessalonians 3:10. The difference is that the people who live under God's economy, do not see their work as their source of provision. They see and know God as their ultimate Source and their True Provider. Those under the system of mammon are always toiling to keep up with the latest displays of wealth- new cars, bigger houses, fashion trends, etc. But it's never enough. In Mammon's system, they work to get. In God's economy, one works to serve the LORD, to walk in His promises, to give, and to fulfill His WORD.
In God's economy, man's steps are directed by the LORD and His WORD. In the economy of the world, a man's steps are led by his carnal lusts for things such as riches, sex, fame, and the validation of other people. In God's economy, the people of His kingdom have fulfillment in their work, as they do everything unto the glory of God.
"And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." Colossians 3:17
"Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31
To work in God's economy is to be at peace, because you know it is God directing your steps. You aren't overcome by the cares of the system of the world, because you trust God's way, God's will, and God's timing. When you're working, selfish ambition is not your goal like those who worship Mammon, but rather you aim to walk in the light of Christ and to follow His WORD. You do not rely on yourself, nor your job, nor your employers, but you rely on God to supply all of your needs. You work with diligence and honor for the LORD, while simultaneously understanding that He is the one who owns the cattle on a thousand hills and He owns all the gold and the silver in the world.
This is what it means to live in God's economy. Your job is where the LORD has placed you in order to fulfill His WORD and His will. Your work is a place of purpose that magnifies the LORD. Your provision is a testimony of His goodness and His kingdom. Your life is a reflection of the abundant life that Jesus has given you. There is no striving to keep up with the standards of the world, there is no dependency on anything or anyone but the LORD. Because God is your Provider, you are not at the mercy of the financial and economic storms of the world. The One Who multiplied food for 5,000 people from 5 loaves of bread and 7 fishes, is also the One Who has given you spiritual wisdom, knowledge, and might to put food on your own table. Jesus has given you the keys to His kingdom, to His economy, and through Him and the WORD of God, you are free from being a slave to the economy of this world. God's economy is an economy of liberty, where the truth of God's WORD has set you free, and your success doesn't come from your own toiling, striving, nor the sweat on your brow. You succeed because you commit yourself to God and His WORD, and your plans are established. You succeed because you seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all the rest is added unto you. You succeed because the divine power of Jesus Christ has already given you all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of God's WORD.
The LORD withholds no good thing from you.
In the LORD you lack no good thing.
This is God's economy.
